Backing up your studio
Sharing Your Library Between Multiple Computers - Shared by: Krafting
How do I back up my Library? How do I use the same files I purchase on
two computers? These are two frequently-asked questions with several
long discussions attached. The answer comes down to your personal
situation. How many files do you have in your Library? Do you save only
your Silhouette-purchased files in your Library, or do you add your own
creations and those that you collect from other sources?
This is what I've decided is probably the easiest method, especially if
you purchase a lot of designs or add a lot of non-Studio files
to your Library. Choose one computer in your house where you will
download all your Studio files. You can purchase them on the go or from
other computers, just don't actually download them until you're at your
preferred computer. If your second computer/laptop already has some
files on that computer that aren't on your preferred computer, go find
those files and recover the individual purchases, or use up one of your
three "recover all" options to make sure you have every
Silhouette-purchased file on your preferred computer's Library.
Next, find (on your preferred computer) where the Library folder is
Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application
Windows Vista: C:\Program Files\Silhouette
Vista revised, try C:\ProgramData\com.aspexsoftware.Silhouette_Studio.8
Vista 64-bit: C:\Program Files (x86)\Silhouette
Vista 64-bit revised, try C:\ProgramData\com.aspexsoftware.Silhouette_Studio.8
Windows 7 64-bit: C:\ProgramData\com.aspexsoftware.Silhouette_Studio.8
(see the update note below)
Mac: Macintosh HD > Library > Application Support >
(Edited 3-26-12. Please let me know if
these do not work.)
Copy that "com.aspexsoftware.Silhouette_Studio.8"
folder without opening or changing anything in it, then load it to a
thumbdrive or go through your network to paste it to the correct area
(see above if you're using different operating systems). Replace all the
duplicate files if it asks.
I finally tried this to see if it would work, and it did! (I know, some
of you have been doing this for a while.) I was able to copy my Library
exactly with all its folders and subfolders, along with the
non-Silhouette files I've added and they were all there! I copied it
from my Windows 7 64-bit computer to my kids' old XP computer (which is
still running Studio 1.7 because I never use it).
You will need to copy and past that folder as often as you feel is
necessary, because as soon as you download any new files it changes.
Just like any backup system, you need to set up a schedule that is the
right timing for you in order to maintain and keep it up-to-date.
Now, having said all of that, there are a few points to know:
-Silhouette allows you to recover all your designs up to three times in
case of computer upgrades/purchases or computer crashes. They will reset
it for you if you ask with good reason. So if you're not adding your own
files to your Library or trying to use the same files on two computers,
you don't need to do anything I've said because Silhouette's got you
-If you are adding your own files to the Library and Silhouette has no
record of it, then you would lose all of those extras in a computer
crash--this would be a good method for you.
Up until now I've been opening and saving each and every file I purchase
and making a screen-shot thumbnail so I can have it all in a folder I
can copy and carry to my laptop. But if I just copy the one folder I
need (com.aspexsoftware.Silhouette_Studio.8) and save that in a folder
with normally-backed up documents or on a thumb drive to put on my
laptop, that seems even easier. I'd love to hear if anyone who is doing
this method has had any problems with it.
I'm going to include links here to old discussions just so you can see
all the options and what different people prefer:
I'm pinning this topic so you can find and give a
link here for anyone asking about backing up their Library or using it
on multiple computers.
Update: If you are having
trouble with the copied library files not showing up, try deleting the
existing folder first before pasting the
com.aspexsoftware.Silhouette_Studio.8 over the top. Please see
